Where this goes wrong
Cubing when you should have converted, or the reverse
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet because three feet cubed is 27, not 3. The same trap as area, one power worse: get it wrong on a concrete order and you are out by a factor of nine. Every factor on this page is derived by cubing the linear one, never typed by hand.

- How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
- Exactly 27. A yard is three feet, and volume scales with the cube, so 3³ = 27. This is the conversion behind almost every concrete and aggregate order.
- Is a US gallon the same as a UK gallon?
- No, and the gap is large. A US liquid gallon is 231 cubic inches, about 3.785 litres. An imperial gallon is about 4.546 litres — roughly 20% more. This converter uses US gallons.
- How do I convert a volume to a weight?
- Multiply by the density of the material. Water is 1 kg per litre, concrete around 2.4 kg per litre, gravel about 1.5. Volume alone tells you nothing about weight.
